Braemar
A delightful little village 80 miles south east of
Millwood House in Inverness and is close by the Royal Family's holiday
residence Balmoral Castle. At the
eastern approaches to the village is Braemar Castle, a seventeenth century
turreted outpost. In the village is the Invercauld Arms Hotel which stands
on the spot where the Earl of Mar raised the Jacobite standard in 1715 and
there is a plaque commemorating this inside. The Clunie Water clatters
through the village and under a road bridge which offers splendid views
from each side.
The most important event in the area is the Braemar Royal Highland
Gathering held on the first Sunday in September with over 50,000 people
attending. It is a well run event despite the large number of people and
of course there is the eventual arrival of the royal party. |
